Position Overview
- Assist lawyers and other legal assistants in the support and delivery of essential legal services
- Independently draft, prepare, process and file a variety of routine and complex court documents including: Statement of Claim, Statement of Defence, Affidavit of Records, Factums, Book of Authorities, and Arguments.
- Make travel arrangements and complete expense claims for lawyers
- Conduct legal research utilizing Internet resources (eCarswell, online statutes and regulations, courthouse searches)
- Draft complex correspondence such as memos and letters, for signature
- Maintain filing and diarizing systems
- Effectively manage files through liaising with a variety of clients, counsel and interested parties.
- Liaise and communicate effectively with various internal parties and external stakeholders
- Organize and release disclosure to outside counsel
The ideal candidate will have:
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills and the ability to work both independently and in a team setting
- Excellent verbal and written skills
- A comprehensive understanding of the court system and processes
- Strong organizational skills, a keen eye for detail
- Excellent problem solving abilities
- Knowledge of various Acts and legislation as well as policy, procedures, agreements and other authorities
- An aptitude for working with computers in a legal setting, specifically with the following programs: Microsoft Office Suite including Word and Excel.
Qualifications
- Legal Assistant Diploma plus related experience in a legal environment is required.
- Experience with various legal practices, especially the civil litigation and civil forfeiture areas would be considered an asset
- Equivalencies may be considered.
